Climate change is the single biggest threat currently facing mankind.
‘One third of the planet will be desert by the year 2100 say climate experts in the most dire warning yet of the effects of global warming.’
- The Independent, 4th October, 2006.
‘Rains left most of Mexico’s Tabasco state under water for weeks … Tropical Storm Noel triggered flash-floods in the Dominican Republic that killed dozens, while Honduras faces the Category Five hurricane Felix …’
- The Guardian, December 28th 2007.
And, from an organisation on the front line:
‘Seventy percent of UN Missions to natural disasters in 2007 were in response to hurricanes and floods, possibly a glimpse of the shape of things to come, given the reality of climate change.’
- UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

Drought, flooding, heat-waves, the shrinking of the ice-shelf in Antarctica, sea levels rising year by year, the extinction of huge varieties of flora and fauna … the list goes on and on ...
It’s against this background that The Maelstrom Mission takes place. Chief baddie, Maelstrom, plans to exploit the weakened condition of the Earth for his own ends. He knows that all he has to do is give a little nudge and the planet will topple into the abyss. His main weapon? The Super Hurricane - an advanced and dreadful version of the hurricanes currently threatening the planet.
And all that stands between mankind and oblivion is … Freddie McBain, a mediocre skateboarder; a Greek Wind Warrior wearing a skirt; an Essex housewife and a few other oddballs ...
Doesn’t seem a very hopeful prospect, does it?
